Hans Inge Aashammer is a Norwegian visual artist whose life is beautifully split between his two homes: one near Oslo, where his studio is based in Vestfold, and another in Málaga, Spain, where he maintains a secondary workspace.
His life is deeply intertwined with creativity – his partner is also an artist, and together they founded the art collective Casa Arte.
What began as a passion project more than a decade ago has blossomed into a full-fledged art career.
Aashammer earned a three-year fine arts diploma from Nydalen Art School, and then stayed on for an additional year to focus on his personal artistic development.
Over time, he also refined his craft through workshops and courses led by notable artists such as Erika Bergstrøm, Ellen Eikenes, Stein Westergård, Inger Bekkelund, and Ellen R. Karlwicz.
With over twenty years of experience, Aashammer has exhibited his work not only in Norway, but also in Sweden, Denmark, and Spain.
His preferred medium is acrylic on canvas, and his work is deeply rooted in nature. He draws much of his inspiration from time spent in forests – especially protected woods where nature is left to grow wild – and along the coast. According to him, he often visits these places “to gather inspiration for my art, body and soul.”
Trees, in particular, recur as both subject and metaphor in his paintings: some reach straight and tall toward the sky, while others twist and bend as if searching for their place. He also reflects on life’s cycles – growth, hardship, decay – as he witnesses in nature, like trees being uprooted in storms, or slowly decomposing and feeding future generations. In his words:
“We are all part of the cycle of life … I want to convey the forest’s wonder – its power, its size, its interplay, but also its ego. I want people to see themselves in those landscapes, to feel something deeper.”
Through his art, Aashammer invites viewers into a contemplative space. His forest scenes aren’t just visually compelling – they resonate emotionally. By portraying nature’s rawness and serenity, he creates a mirror for our own lives: full of hopes, dreams, turbulence, and growth. The quiet majesty of his trees suggests endurance and resilience; their varied forms speak to our personal journeys.
At the heart of his work is this emotional connection – not just to the forest, but to ourselves. In viewing a piece by Aashammer, one can feel both grounded and uplifted, invited to reflect on one’s own path.
