Michelle Ditrich is an Austrian artist whose passion is art in all forms and techniques.
Her interest in art started in her childhood and got interrupted only for a short time while she studied to become a freight forwarder. Soon after she finished her studies, she returned to her passion and became a full-time artist.
She works from her Rooftop Studio in Vienna, Austria where she also lives. Through the combination of work and life at one location, she gets to be creative whenever she has the desire to create her different art pieces and whenever she feels inspired without having to go to a separate studio.
Ditrich is a compelling example of contemporary, internationally active artist who rejects conventional methods in favour of deeply personal and visceral creation.
Her career is decades long and was supported by her education in private studies under Max Weiler at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
To broaden her spiritual and cultural inspiration, she travelled the world and has been to places such as the Caribbean, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Florida, Mauritius and Hawaii.
At the beginning of her career, she painted with brushed but soon she found her own style.
The artist is known for her unique painting technique where she does not use traditional brushes but instead is painting mostly with her hands and fingers. She is adding additional accents with objects or utensils like gold leaf spray at times, creating and special and unforgettable look.
Additionally, her oeuvre is highly versatile: if it is oil on paper or canvas, watercolours, sand on paper, original two-colour etchings, wax paintings, Rakku sculptures, painted fashion and interior design pieces or even art on walls – she is doing it all. Her creativity has no bounds and that is represented in her art.
As diverse as the technique are also the designs. Her pieces cover the cosmos, nature, architecture, portraits and human figures as well as landscapes and interiors.
One of her most monumental pieces is her largest art piece titled “The Lament / Western Wall in Vienna” which spans 40m in length and 2.5m in height and took her three months to create. The piece was created and displayed in a public space.
She doesn’t choose her subject, the subject chooses her. Michelle Ditrich is guided by intuition, experimentation and an “inner force” that drives her and guides her to the next unique piece she is creating.
Not only, has she already had a career that spans multiple decades but her art is also highly recognised with nearly 30 international awards.
Amongst these honors are the “Pegasus” Prize (2023, Venice), a 2022 award in Paris, “Poseidone” and a Magister of Art title (2022, Lecce), “Ambassador of Art” (Milan, 2021), and “Artist of the Year” at the Sciortino Museum (2020, Monreale). One of the most important awards is the Gold Decoration of Merit of the Republic of Austria, the highest recognition in Austria which she received in 2020.
This year, she received an Oscar for creativity for her art in Monte Carlo, it was the 28th award.
She is recognised in international catalogues and has taken part in exhibitions all over the world. Galleries in London, Vienna, Venice and many more have shown her art. Her work was shown in multiple museums such as the Museum of the Americas in Miami, Florida and a piece was even shown in the Vatican.
Her hands and fingers are her instrument, giving her paintings a distinctive presence, sensuality and spontaneity that distinguish her pieces. She balances natural elements, human emotions, abstraction and symbolic depth.
Every piece is unique and as she uses her bare hands, her works can’t be counterfeited – her handprints function as a trademark – capturing Michelle Ditrich as a person, guided by creativity and her passion for art that is not a profession but her calling.
