Molly ‘Maureen Phiri’ Winckelmans is a Belgian-Zimbabwean painter whose work transcends cultural barriers and speaks to universal themes of female strength, emancipation, and motherhood. Born in Zimbabwe and now residing in the quiet countryside of Bornem, near Antwerp, Belgium, Molly’s journey as an artist has been one of perseverance and dedication.

Despite facing immense resistance and prejudice from her own family towards pursuing art, Molly’s unwavering commitment to her craft led her to receive a prestigious scholarship from the National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe. Her dedication and talent were highly recognized by both her teachers and the Gallery’s Art Director. In 1994, she became the only female student in her class to complete the entire training course, marking a significant milestone in her career.

Molly’s life in Southern Africa, particularly in Zambia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, provided her with a unique perspective, allowing her to connect with and move fluidly between diverse populations. These experiences shaped her art, enabling her to adapt seamlessly to life in Belgium. Today, in Bornem, she is known for her hard work and contribution to the local cultural scene, bringing a progressive and open approach to the world of art.

Throughout her career, Molly has earned recognition in Zimbabwe, where she received seven awards, and two of her works were acquired by the National Art Gallery to be displayed in their permanent collection. Regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s leading female painters, she has sold her works across Southern Africa, Europe, and America.
