Gábor Richter was born in Mohács, in southern Hungary.
After graduating from high school, he moved to Budapest and studied engineering.
This time helped the now renowned to get a deep understanding of technical systems. At the same time, he developed his fascination for a more creative expression.
In 1980, he moved to Germany to start his engineering career. For many years, Richter worked as an airport planner where he contributed to projects all over Germany and internationally.
His career in engineering was very successful, yet it wasn’t his passion. His passion remained art.
In 2013, he started his career in art by first going through professional training to learn techniques, styles and gain perspective in art.
The artist began his professional training at the Art Academy of Bad Reichenhall and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kolbermoor.
He particularly valued his formative time with his mentor, Professor Markus Lüpertz, at the Academy of Fine Arts Kolbermoor. This period helped him to discover his own style and encouraged him to embrace artistic freedom. His exchange with the renowned German artist not only inspired him but also marked the beginning of his freelance career. In 2016, Richter received his final diploma from Lüpertz, completing his studies with a unique visual language that continues to define his work.
Gábor Richter demonstrates his versatility as an artist through his wide range of series and individual pieces. His practice focuses mainly on painting, sculpture, and mixed media. He works with materials such as acrylic, oil, glass, metal, and textiles. Richter’s works are distinguished by their layered surfaces and deliberate interventions. By applying multiple coats of paint, which he then scratches, tears, and reshapes with other materials, he creates compositions where earlier layers remain partially visible. This technique evokes the passage of time and transformation.
His art draws inspiration from personal experiences, his Hungarian roots, and his travels to places such as New York and Provence.
Over the years, Richter has continued to refine his artistic approach. He believes that while life experiences are essential for an artist, true creativity emerges from taking risks, challenging oneself, and embracing experimentation.
Among his notable series are the Presidential Portraits, which depict former American presidents. These layered works reflect on the use of power, successes, and responsibilities of each leader, aiming to capture their emotional, political, and societal impact through his artistic lens.
Richter’s Hungarian heritage is deeply expressed in his series Hungarian Reality. Here, he explores the country’s current social and political climate, addressing themes of power structures, inequality, and collective oppression. The series confronts the contradictions between cultural heritage and poverty, fear, political manipulation, and social exclusion. Rather than instructing the viewer, Richter seeks to provoke reflection and questioning.
His art is characterized by bold colors, strong emotions, and visual tensions that invite viewers to feel, connect, and be inspired. Balancing chaos and order, his compositions oscillate between abstraction and figuration. The result is work that feels alive, dynamic, and multi-dimensional—charged with a raw yet poetic intensity.
Richter’s artistic journey has been recognized internationally. In 2023, he presented in multiple exhibitions and received four awards, including the Michelangelo International Prize.
